Installation

Set up ship and shore

The short version. The full illustrated procedure is in the PDF guide.

Install NavTech on board

No installer, no database and no internet needed.

  1. Create a folder such as C:\NavTech with sub-folders Backups and Documents.
  2. Copy NavTech-PMS.html into it and double-click the file. It opens in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
  3. Log in as admin with the PIN supplied and set your own PIN. Add Officer and Shore users.
  4. Open Settings → Vessel details and fill in the vessel particulars, including the IMO number.
  5. Edit components and jobs to match the ship, and set running hours and last-done dates.
  6. Open Settings → Shore sync settings, enter the shore address and the vessel key, and save.
Remember: always open NavTech from the same folder, with the same browser and Windows user. Data is stored in that browser, so take an encrypted backup every month.

Install the Shore Server in the fleet office

One office computer that stays switched on. Node.js (version 16 or higher) is the only requirement.

  1. Install Node.js LTS from nodejs.org and check it with node -v.
  2. Put navtech-shore-server.js in a folder such as C:\NavTechShore.
  3. Start the server. The admin password is shown on the first run only, so write it down.
  4. Open http://localhost:8080, log in, and set your own admin password.
  5. Allow port 8080 through the firewall and give the server a fixed address; use HTTPS when it is reachable from the internet.
  6. In Admin, register each vessel by IMO number and send each ship its own vessel key. Add superintendents and managers.
cd C:\NavTechShore
node navtech-shore-server.js

# keep it running permanently (all systems)
npm install -g pm2
pm2 start navtech-shore-server.js --name navtech
pm2 save
Back up the navtech-data folder regularly. It holds all vessels, users and snapshots.

Updating to a new version

Your data is carried over automatically.

  1. On the ship: Settings → Export encrypted backup and save the file.
  2. Close NavTech, rename the old file, and copy the new NavTech-PMS.html into the same folder.
  3. Open it, log in and check the vessel name, jobs and stock. If the screen is empty, use Settings → Import backup.
  4. On shore: back up navtech-data, stop the server, replace navtech-shore-server.js and start it again. Ships reconnect by themselves.

Attaching manuals, drawings and photos

Attach documents to equipment, jobs and spares on the vessel computer.

  1. Receive the file by e-mail or USB and save it in C:\NavTech\Documents.
  2. Click the 📎 button next to the job, spare or equipment.
  3. Choose + Attach file, select the document and confirm.
  4. Click the file name any time to open it.
Note: attached files stay on the computer where they were added and are not part of backups or shore sync. Keep the originals in the Documents folder as well.

Ordering questions

Good to know

How is NavTech delivered?

You receive the files and the installation guide from us after your order is confirmed. There is nothing to install on board other than copying the file.

Do I need the Shore Server?

No. Each ship works fully on its own. The Shore Server is for companies that want a fleet overview and to send instructions to ships.

Can we start with one vessel and add more later?

Yes. Start with a single ship, then register more vessels in the Shore Server as your fleet grows.

What help do we get to get started?

The illustrated guide covers every step, and we help your first vessel and shore office through setup. Ask us about training and data loading.

What about licence and payment terms?

They are stated clearly in your quotation, so you can review them before you decide.
